About Us

My father introduced me to the art of hand lettering and sign making at an early age. I started helping him when I was a teenager in the early 1970s.  He impressed upon me the need for using an appropriate font, not overcrowding the lettering, leaving plenty of margin space, proper kerning (spacing between lettering), pleasing color choices, and overall readability, especially from a distance or on a moving vehicle. These characteristics can mean the difference between a sign that works for you and one that doesn't!

I started Custom Lettering in North Plainfield, NJ in 1975.  Back then most of the work was done by hand: hand lettering, hand carving, etc.  If you wanted to be in the sign business, you put in a lot of time practicing your craft before you were proficient enough to sell your work.  It took patience and perseverance to learn the trade. It wasn't just a matter of purchasing a computer with signage software and calling yourself a sign maker. While I have embraced much of the new technology, computers are just tools to achieve your goal of a pleasing sign. Experience is the difference between a sign that works for you and one that doesn't!

In 1988 I relocated to Harmony Township, Phillipsburg, NJ, where I continue to serve the New Jersey/eastern Pennsylvania area.
